LIMPOPO - Prince Lekukela Modjaji has been traditionally crowned as the king of the Balobedu.

On Friday, 30 September, the Pretoria High Court dismissed Princess Masalanabo's application to prevent the traditional installation of Prince Lekukela Modjadji, reported the SABC News.

Times Live reported that the African National Congress (ANC) member of parliament, Mathole Motshekga, initiated the urgent application as the princess' guardian to prevent her brother Lekukela from being inaugurated as king.

The Balobedu dynasty has, for the last 200 years, been ruled by Rain Queens, so the installation of the King-elect is unprecedented. Princess Masalanabo was expected to succeed mother Makobo Modjadi, who died in June 2005. A community representative said:

“We expected Masalanabo to take over we had hopes that she will follow in the footsteps of her mother and be a queen as per our tradition,”

Here are some social media comments on the new king:

@Constitution_94 posted:

"There can never be any sensible decision a young kid in her late teens & the early twenties can make on behalf of a nation. She still needs her own parenting to learn about life. I think she just wants those perks. Nothing more!"

@Abi_Maila said:

"Khosi ya Balobedu ae bonwe! The nation’s clan praise cautions the pointing of former royal burial grounds (Dhaja), which, perhaps forgivable, would be the pointing to the current grounds (Maolwe). Past, present, or future. Pointing out Modjadji publicly is rare and most taboo."

@simply_esthersa asked:

"Can anyone please help me understand the situation at the royal house who exactly is supposed to be the next Queen? Hours later, I still can't accept that Prince Lekukela Modjadji is the new king. Instead of Princess Masalanabo Modjadji."

@abelmafhoho added:

"Motshekga, a former adviser to the royal family, raised and educated Princess Masalanabo Modjadji, who was tipped to be Queen Modjadji VII when she reached the legal age of 18 in two years."
