LIMPOPO — A 74-year-old grandfather is set to appear before the Seshego Magistrate's Court after his arrest on Monday evening, 3 August 2026, on allegations of raping two of his young granddaughters. Officers from the Seshego Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit carried out the arrest.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that the victims are aged five and eight. According to Ledwaba, the suspect allegedly assaulted each child separately at the family home where they all reside, with the incidents occurring earlier this year before being formally reported to the police.

Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the alleged conduct, stating that police would ensure the matter receives a thorough investigation. Scheepers reiterated that units within the province remain committed to pursuing cases involving violence against vulnerable members of society. Another man in Limpopo was arrested in February for allegedly raping his stepdaughter.

Free State sexual assault arrest in Zastron

In a separate case in the Free State, a 29-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in the Zastron Magistrate's Court following an alleged sexual assault in Matlakeng, Zastron, on Friday, 31 July 2026.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Sinah Mpakane said a 24-year-old man was confronted near a bottle store in the area and threatened with a knife. The suspect allegedly forced the victim to walk to the Lere La Thuto Sports Ground, where the assault took place.

Mpakane confirmed that the victim managed to escape after drawing the attention of members of the public who were passing by. The victim sustained a knife laceration and a bite injury. These injuries contributed to the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect. Both matters are expected to be heard before the respective magistrates' courts in due course.
