Furlong was cleared by an independent United Rugby Championship (URC) disciplinary committee on Thursday, 29 October 2026, after being accused of grabbing Munster forward Gavin Coombes in the groin area during their match on Saturday, 24 October.

The decision prompted a reaction from Erasmus, who took to X on Friday, 30 October, expressing his frustration with what he described as another return to the boardrooms.

"Back to Boardrooms again. It's so sick! ....... I am so proud being 🇿🇦. I wonder if they are proud🤔 A Wonder if they really sleep well tonight🤔," Erasmus wrote.

Nick Mallett questions Rassie Erasmus’ Springbok selection ahead of November Tests

His latest comments have attracted attention, particularly given his previous criticism of the URC disciplinary process involving Bulls and Springboks forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels.

Why the Tadhg Furlong decision has attracted attention

Furlong appeared before a three-person independent disciplinary committee comprising Simon Thomas of Wales, South Africa's Attie Heyns and Scotland's Pamela Woodman. The committee unanimously dismissed the citing complaint, concluding that the Leinster prop had not committed an act of foul play under Law 9.27.

The law prohibits conduct against the spirit of good sportsmanship, including grabbing, twisting or squeezing an opponent's private parts.

However, the committee also made an important distinction in its findings, stating that Coombes had given an honest account of his recollection of the incident and that the complaint had been properly brought before it.

Furlong is therefore free to play and remains available for selection for Ireland's upcoming Nations Championship fixtures.

Springboks vs Ireland: Rugby star escapes lengthy ban after World Rugby allegations

Erasmus' latest comments bring back memories of October 2025, when he publicly expressed his frustration after Wessels received a nine-match suspension following an incident involving Connacht forward Josh Murphy.

Murphy had alleged that Wessels grabbed him in the groin area during a URC match. The incident was not conclusively established during the initial television review, but a subsequent disciplinary hearing found that foul play had occurred.

The disciplinary panel determined that the offence met the red-card threshold and imposed a 12-week suspension before reducing it by three weeks because of mitigating factors.

Wessels' initial nine-match suspension ruled him out of several important fixtures, including the Springboks' November international matches.

At the time, Erasmus posted on X:

"It just got tougher!! We now have to beat them on the field. And in the boardrooms........"

His latest post suggests that his concerns about rugby's disciplinary processes have not gone away. Erasmus' comments attracted a mixture of support and criticism from rugby followers on X.

One supporter, Mani, encouraged the Springbok coach to keep speaking out, writing:

"Keep at it, Rassie, we thank you! Happy to buy you a beer at Doodles next time you’re in the area as a very small token of our appreciation."
