The Boks will face Italy, France and Ireland in November before the competition's finals weekend in London. Erasmus has included six uncapped players, with Markus Muller among the newcomers, while Salmaan Moerat and Aphelele Fassi have also made the squad.

However, some fans have questioned the inclusion of certain players and pointed to alternatives they believe deserved an opportunity.

Springboks fans question Moerat's inclusion

Marc Jacobson questioned Moerat's selection, arguing that several other locks had stronger claims to a place in the squad. He named Ruben van Heerden, Schickerling, Cobus Wiese, JJ van der Mescht, Ruan Botha and Jason Jenkins among the players he believes should have been considered ahead of Moerat.

The debate around the La Rochelle lock comes after his return to action following an injury, with his inclusion providing another talking point in Erasmus' squad announcement.

Another supporter, Luke, also questioned Moerat's recall while defending the scrutiny surrounding Muller, who is in line for his first senior Springbok cap.

"People are so mad about Markus Muller that nobody’s noticed that Moerat has weasled his way back into the squad without doing much to earn it," he wrote on X.

The supporter argued that Moerat had not done enough in a Springbok jersey to escape criticism, adding that the debate around the experienced forward had been overshadowed by the attention given to the teenage newcomer.

Aphelele Fassi and Markus Muller also drew criticism

Fassi's inclusion also attracted criticism from a supporter using the BOKMARKS account on X.

"Fassi is this era’s Elton: the whole country knows he’s not good enough to play yet he keeps getting selected," the supporter wrote.

The comparison expressed the user's frustration with what they see as repeated selection opportunities for the Sharks fullback. Meanwhile, another supporter questioned whether Muller was the strongest option among the available young centres.

uLuvuko, who said they had backed Muller in the past, suggested that Jurenzo and Ethan Adams had moved ahead of him this season.

"Even I who bought stock in Muller years ago, can’t help but feel that Jurenzo and Ethan Adams are ahead of him this year," they wrote.

Erasmus named six uncapped players in his 37-man squad, including Muller, fly-halves Yaqeen Ahmed and Luan Giliomee, winger Sebastian de Klerk, lock Riley Norton and loose forward Emmanuel Tshituka.

The coach said the newcomers had been on the national team's radar and had delivered consistently for their franchises over the past two seasons.

South Africa will begin their November campaign against Italy on 7 November before facing France and Ireland.
