KWAZULU-NATAL - A video showing a volatile confrontation between residents and foreign nationals outside a row of shops has gone viral on social media.
The clip has reignited the debate over anti-immigration enforcement actions taking place across the country. The clip was shared on X by @zanewsflash on 7 August 2026 and was filmed on a pavement in front of several businesses.
The handheld footage shows a crowd gathering around what appears to be an escalating physical altercation, with sticks or similar objects seen in the hands of those involved. The scene then turned chaotic as the groups clashed outside the store, hitting each other with weapons as some of the crowds scrambled to get away.

Shop-to-shop checks fuelling tensions
The incident comes against a backdrop of sustained anti-immigration activity in South Africa.
Several groups have been conducting systematic inspections of foreign-owned businesses, including spaza shops and factories.
During these operations, participants have reportedly demanded to see immigration and trading documentation, removed stock, ordered business closures, and in some cases directly confronted owners.

The clip drew mixed responses on X, with opinion divided on who bears responsibility for the deteriorating situation.

Somali shop owners given deadline to leave
Briefly News reported that Somali shop owners in Thokoza were given 67 minutes to pack up and vacate their premises on Nelson Mandela Day.
A video of the incident went viral on X, showing a van loaded with shop stock while police officers stood nearby.
The eviction timeframe deliberately mirrored the 67-minute community service tradition observed annually on 18 July.
