EASTERN CAPE - Oscar Mabuyane has confirmed that no decision has yet been made on what type of funeral will be accorded to slain boxing champion Zolani Tete.
Tete (38), a two-time world champion (IBF junior-bantamweight 2014 and WBO bantamweight 2017-2019), was ambushed and shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane on 22 August 2026. Four people have since been arrested in connection with the murder.
Mabuyane, the Eastern Cape Premier, made the remarks about Tete’s funeral after visiting his family at the home on Monday, 24 August 2026.

Premier defers to President on State funeral decision
Speaking on the question of a possible State funeral, Mabuyane acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter while pointing to the President's sole authority in making such a determination.
"That's a tricky one, because here you have got so many champions. So, what determines that is the profile, when that profile is being looked at, and the unfortunate part is also the competence of the President. No one else.
"We might have submitted to the President with that, but it's something that we know is sensitive. We can't speak about it until the President decides," Mabuyane explained.
