4 Suspects in Custody Over Zolani Tete Murder, More Arrests Expected

Four people are in custody in connection with the murder of two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete, with Eastern Cape police confirming that further arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues.

Tete was shot and killed outside his home in Mdantsane on Friday evening. A 27-year-old woman who was with him at the time sustained gunshot wounds and was still receiving hospital treatment as of Sunday night.
Swift arrests made within 24 hours
Police moved quickly, making the first two arrests within a day of the shooting. A 30-year-old man and a 22-year-old suspect were both apprehended in KuGompo City on Saturday. The 30-year-old was subsequently released after questioning and is now being treated as a potential witness. The 22-year-old, however, was formally charged with Tete's murder and is expected to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court on Monday.

According to a report by the Daily Dispatch, three further suspects, two aged 27 and one aged 28, were arrested on Sunday in Mdantsane and Scenery Park. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that all three are also expected to appear in court.
Investigation still active
Gantana said the SAPS was continuing to pursue leads, but cautioned that operational sensitivities limited what could be disclosed publicly.
"More arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds, and police are continuing to follow up on leads. Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details at this time. The SAPS commends the investigating team for their diligence and swift action in ensuring the apprehension of the suspects," Gantana said.

Tete, a celebrated South African boxer who held world titles at bantamweight and super-flyweight, was killed on Friday, 22 August 2026. Five individuals have been arrested since his death, though the total in custody currently stands at four following the release of the older suspect.
