GAUTENG — The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have publicly distanced themselves from Fani John Sibeko, a former proportional representative councillor who appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on 15 October 2026 facing four counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm in a public place, and failure to secure a licensed firearm.

News24 reported that the charges stem from an alleged shooting involving four African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) members in Katlehong. The EFF confirmed that Sibeko served as a proportional representative councillor for the party in the City of Ekurhuleni from 2016 to 2021. The party noted that he departed from the organisation in 2022 and later affiliated himself with a different political formation.

ANCYL regional chairperson Simphiwe Patose took a different position, alleging that the shooting was politically motivated and directly linked to the accused's political associations. Dunga rejected this framing, stating the matter had no political dimension.
