A video of a Lekompo artist apparently speaking from a hospital bed has gone viral on X, drawing sharp commentary from music commentator NOTA and sparking a broader conversation about the genre and its culture.

The clip, filmed in a close-up selfie style indoors, shows a man lying on what appears to be a hospital pillow, with branded linens visible in the background. His tone throughout is sombre and reflective, speaking in a mix of languages in fragmented, emotionally charged sentences. He references debts, loyalty, and the weight of facing death, saying: "When a man was under the ground, I will not be able to do this."

The video was shared on X by controversial music commentator @lavidaNOTA, who accompanied it with a blunt caption:

"Lekompo is satanic… Thank goodness, it's dead now. Amen!"

NOTA attributed the clip to a Lekompo artist and claimed he was "bragging about the amount of girls he has infected with HIV," a characterisation that drew both agreement and pushback from X users. The post attracted tens of thousands of views and ignited a fierce back-and-forth about the genre, which originates from Limpopo and has built a loyal following in South Africa's northern regions.

X users react

Responses to the clip were largely critical of both the artist and the genre itself.

@EPHRAIM4774 fired back at NOTA's "satanic" label, writing:

"Satanic is your skinny legs. 🚮"

@DrJACKRA brought up the Lekompo king's signature phrase, noting:

"And the Lekompo king used to summon him ka 'Shita wena'. 😭😭"

@Bruno_Rams14 offered cultural context, writing:

"In Limpopo, the word 'lekompo' is derogatory. It's used to describe uncivilised people. I'm not surprised by the behaviour of lekompo artists; that's makompo behaviour or culture."

The video resurfaced old tensions around Lekompo, a genre that has often been criticised for its lyrics and lifestyle associations, while defenders argue it reflects an authentic slice of life in rural and peri-urban Limpopo communities.
