Hansie Cronje’s 57th birthday has prompted emotional tributes from his siblings, who remembered the former Proteas captain more than 24 years after his death. Cronje was born in Bloemfontein on 25 September 1969 and died in a plane crash in June 2002, aged 32.
His brother Frans shared a photograph on Facebook featuring Hansie and their late father, Ewie Cronje. Reflecting on what his younger brother might have looked like at 57, Frans wrote:
“Would have been my brother, Hansie’s 57th birthday today.”
He continued:

“I thought of asking AI to generate a pic of what he might have looked like today, but I think he would have looked like my dad Ewie, sitting next to him.”
Frans ended the tribute with the words:
“Such beautiful memories.”
Hester remembers Hansie at Grey College
Hansie’s sister, Hester, marked the occasion differently. She shared footage from a visit to a memorial wall at Grey College in Bloemfontein, where Cronje was educated. The school’s Wall of Remembrance records his dates as 25 September 1969 to 1 June 2002.
Alongside the clip, Hester simply wrote:
“Miss you, Hansie.”
Cronje was a prominent figure in South African cricket in the 1990s before the match-fixing scandal ended his career.
A complicated legacy
Hansie Cronje’s international career came to a dramatic end in 2000 after he admitted before the King Commission of Inquiry that he had accepted money from bookmakers in connection with match-fixing. He was subsequently banned for life from professional cricket.
But the former Proteas captain’s story did not end with cricket. After his ban, Cronje moved into the business world and worked as a financial manager for an agricultural machinery company in Johannesburg. He had also earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Free State and was pursuing further studies before his death.
Then, on 1 June 2002, tragedy struck. Cronje had missed his scheduled flight from Johannesburg to George and later travelled as the only passenger aboard a Hawker Siddeley HS 748. Near George, the aircraft lost visibility while attempting to land and crashed into the Outeniqua Mountains. Cronje and both pilots were killed. He was only 32.
His death came just two years after the scandal that had ended his cricket career. More than 24 years later, Cronje remains a deeply recognisable name in South African cricket — remembered both for the success he achieved as Proteas captain and for the controversy that ultimately changed the course of his career.
For his family, however, the memories are also personal. His recent birthday tributes show that behind the cricket headlines and scandal was a son, brother and friend whose absence is still felt.
Allan Donald’s emotional Hansie Cronje tribute
