Mondeor High School is mourning the death of former hockey captain Kamohelo Makhetha, who led the school's hockey team in 2023.

The Johannesburg school shared an emotional tribute to Makhetha on Instagram, remembering the former pupil and hockey player as someone whose legacy would remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

The post has attracted widespread attention, with thousands of likes and numerous messages of condolence from people who knew Makhetha or were touched by the school's tribute.

The school added:

"Forever remembered, forever missed. Though absent from your body, may your spirit rest peacefully with the Lord, our Creator."

The accompanying graphic features Makhetha wearing his blue Mondeor High School blazer, with hockey sticks and a white dove incorporated into the tribute.

The words "Absent from your body but to be present with the Lord your Creator" also appear on the image.

Social media users mourn former hockey captain

The tribute prompted an emotional response from social media users, with former pupils and members of the public filling the comments section with messages of sympathy.

Some commenters described Makhetha affectionately, while others posted messages wishing him eternal rest. Candles, dove and broken-heart emojis were also widely used as people reacted to the news.

The response reflects the impact Makhetha appears to have had on members of the Mondeor High School community during his time at the school. Despite announcing Makhetha's death, Mondeor High School has not publicly disclosed the circumstances surrounding his passing.
