Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo was honoured with a major football tribute just days after his death, with Scottland supporters displaying huge banners featuring him and his wife, Lucy ‘Lulu’ Muteke, at Rufaro Stadium.

The tribute took place on Sunday, 4 October 2026, before Scottland faced Bulawayo Chiefs in a ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Scottland fans displayed at least seven large banners carrying photographs of Chivayo and Muteke. The banners also featured the Scottland badge and the words:

A moment of silence was also held before the match.

Chivayo and Muteke died in a helicopter crash in Zimbabwe on 30 September. Authorities confirmed there were no survivors.

Scottland players wanted to honour their benefactor

The tribute came as Scottland played their first competitive match since Chivayo's death. The businessman had been one of the club's major sponsors and benefactors, making the fixture an emotional occasion for the players and supporters.

Scottland coach Norman Mapeza said the club was still struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“We are still in shock. Wicknell was like a brother to me, I knew him for a very long time. May his soul rest in peace,” Mapeza said, according to The Herald.

Defender Albert Manenji said the players wanted their football to become part of the tribute.

“We just have to honour him with our performances on the pitch, starting with the match against Bulawayo Chiefs,” Manenji said.

The scenes at Rufaro offered a striking glimpse into Chivayo's connection with Scottland. The club now moves into the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup semi-finals, while continuing its league campaign.
