Wicknell Chivayo’s death has cast a fresh spotlight on the financial future of Zimbabwean football club Highlanders FC, with the Bulawayo giants announcing a 91-day strategic operational review days after losing their biggest recent benefactor.
Chivayo died in a helicopter crash in the Marondera area on 30 September 2026 alongside his wife, Lucy Muteke, and other passengers. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since declared him a provincial hero.
What makes the timing particularly striking is that Highlanders had received another US$250,000 (about R4.2 million) from Chivayo on the same day. The club said the latest payment would help settle outstanding obligations to its playing staff and provide financial stability.

Highlanders — commonly known as Bosso — is one of Zimbabwe’s most historic football institutions. Founded in 1926, the Bulawayo club is celebrating its centenary this year.
Chivayo had become a financial pillar for Bosso
Chivayo’s involvement with Highlanders went well beyond a traditional sponsorship arrangement.
In June 2025, he announced a US$1 million (about R16.7 million) sponsorship package for the club. He later provided additional funding, including money for player obligations, recruitment and administration, and donated a team bus.
His financial intervention had already been critical before the latest payments. In February 2025, Chivayo reportedly provided about US$27,000 (about R451,000) to help Highlanders avoid a FIFA transfer ban over money owed to former coach Baltemar Brito and his assistant.
Highlanders president Dumisani Sandi later described Chivayo as a crucial figure in the club’s recent history.
“Chivayo had appeared God-sent to us...he came in at the right time when we were facing collapse with no other imminent source of funding,” Sandi said.
That comment gives the latest development considerable context.
Highlanders launches 91-day review
On 3 October, just three days after Chivayo’s death, Highlanders announced that its Executive Committee and Secretariat management had begun a 91-day strategic operational review.
See the post below:
The process will run until 31 December 2026 and cover governance, agreements, assets, systems, human capital, internal processes, financial and operational controls, football operations and stakeholder engagement.
The club says the aim is to identify “opportunities and structural gaps”, strengthen accountability and efficiency, and build a sustainable, results-oriented football business.
Highlanders did not formally link the review to Chivayo's passing, but the timing places it at one of the most consequential moments in the club's recent history.
The club says it wants to use the process to help shape its future beyond its centenary. Its closing message was telling: “Building the Future Beyond 100.”
