Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro died at the age of 25 after collapsing on the pitch during a football match in Portugal on Saturday, 22 August 2026. Castro was playing for Real Sport Clube against Estrela da Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira when he suddenly fell during the match.

Castro collapsed around 10 minutes into the match. Medical teams immediately rushed onto the pitch and attempted to revive him, including with a defibrillator. He was taken to hospital but could not be saved.

The Lisbon Football Association confirmed that Castro had “passed away this morning during a pre-season friendly.”

Former West Brom midfielder remembered

Castro joined West Brom in 2021 and made his first-team debut against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup. He later featured against Swansea in the Championship.

West Brom said it was “devastated” by his death and will honour him with applause in the 25th minute against Burnley on Sunday, 23 August 2026. Players will also wear black armbands.

Football clubs pay tribute

Estrela da Amadora expressed its “deepest sorrow” and sent condolences to Castro’s family, friends and Real Sport Clube.

Castro also played for Burton Albion, Notts County, York City, King's Lynn Town and Eastbourne Borough before returning to Portugal.

His death has left clubs across England and Portugal mourning a young footballer whose career spanned two countries.

Briefly News also reported that a football match in Thailand ended in tragedy on 4 August 2026 when lightning struck the pitch during a regional tournament.
