Mamelodi Sundowns Advised to Turn to Former Orlando Pirates Star to Solve Squad Concerns

  • Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Joseph Sibiya named one specific striker he believes the club must sign to complete their squad
  • Sibiya said in a recent interview that Sundowns create enough chances but lack the finisher needed to capitalise on them this season
  • A football analyst speaking with Briefly News exclusively shared his opinion on the former Sundowns goalkeeper's recommendation

Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Joseph Sibiya has identified Tshegofatso Mabasa as the one signing that could push the Tshwane giants to a clean sweep of trophies this season.

Speaking to KickOff, Sibiya praised the club's structure and long-term vision before turning his attention to what he sees as the squad's one weakness, a reliable finisher.

Sibiya Makes the Case for Mabasa

"At Sundowns, the system remains the same and there is continuity. This is the result of having a long-term plan," Sibiya said. "We could achieve a clean sweep of trophies this season with the players we have, although I believe we still need a reliable finisher."

Sibiya was direct about who should fill that role. "If we can sign Mabasa, he would be a good acquisition. We need a finisher, and he is one. Sundowns create chances, and he would score plenty of goals."

Mabasa, who previously played for Orlando Pirates, currently turns out for Moroccan Botola Pro League side Maghreb de Fes.

Analyst Modise Disagrees With Sibiya's Assessment

Football analyst Themba Modise offered a contrasting view in an exclusive interview with Briefly News, arguing that the signing would be unnecessary.

"I don't agree with Sibiya on this because signing Mabasa now would create unnecessary competition, because we already have that in the right back position," Modise said. "I think Brayan Leon and Iqraam Rayners are capable of doing the job, if we needed another finishing we should've kept Peter Shaluile if that was the case."

Modise's remarks reflect a broader debate among Sundowns supporters about whether the squad requires reinforcement in attack or whether the existing options simply need more consistent opportunities to prove their worth.

Sundowns have remained a dominant force in South African football, though converting chances has occasionally proved a sticking point during the current campaign.
