Jason Goliath is tired of men painting marriage as a life sentence. The South African comedian and entertainer sat down with radio and TV personality Relebogile Mabotja on 16 October 2026 and delivered a passionate, often hilarious defence of being a husband.
Goliath had little patience for the men who commonly describe marriage as a "jail," insisting their framing has robbed other men of something genuinely beautiful.
"You're idiots. Because you should have prepared me and said, 'Marriage is the best thing you will ever do. It's hard, but if you acknowledge that it's the best thing you will ever do, you will give up all that single nonsense and bathe yourself in the beauty of marriage," he said.
He even cracked a joke to drive the point home.

The six-to-eight hugs rule
Beyond the laughs, Goliath got candid about the advice that has genuinely shaped his marriage. His wife's great-aunt passed on a deceptively simple tip: hug each other six to eight times a day.
He explained that the real power of that habit only reveals itself during moments of conflict. When you reach out and hold your partner while you're still angry, something shifts. "It's so hard not to forgive," he said.
He also shared the physical detail that confirmed his wife was the right person for him. The moment her hand touched his, his body responded in a way that was impossible to argue with.
"Sometimes I'll avoid it because I'm not finished being upset. It's so hard to compete with when the person is the right person," he admitted.

Contract vs covenant
One of the deeper conversations Goliath and his wife have worked through is the distinction between a contract and a covenant. A contract, he argued, is conditional and can collapse the moment one party steps out of line. A covenant operates on an entirely different principle.
"Under a covenant, what you do and how you show up has nothing to do with how I show up. I've made a promise to you, so it doesn't matter your frame of mind, your mood or what you've done; I will treat you and love you under the promise that I've made at the beginning of our relationship," he said.
He also touched on the importance of self-care within a partnership, noting that both he and his wife share the belief that "the best thing you can do for me is to look after yourself," because a person who is well in themselves naturally brings their best into the relationship.
