Pitso Mosimane has drawn on the Springboks' renowned squad development culture as a blueprint for what he wants to build within the Bafana Bafana setup, ahead of his first competitive match as national coach.
South Africa face Guinea in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, with kick-off set for 15:00. A second qualifier against Eritrea at Al Salam Stadium follows on 30 September, before a friendly against Egypt in Cairo on 4 October.
Mosimane's approach to squad selection
The coach has assembled a group that blends experienced campaigners with a crop of young players who have started the domestic season in strong form. Among those catching the eye are Relebohile Mofokeng, Shandré Campbell, Olwethu Makhanya, Ime Okon and Puso Dithejane.
Mosimane intends to field his strongest available side in both AFCON qualifiers before using the Egypt friendly as an opportunity to assess fringe players, returning squad members and younger prospects.

He specifically highlighted the Springboks' ability to field competitive teams across multiple levels as evidence that a well-structured system can consistently produce senior-ready players. For Mosimane, the goal is to replicate that culture in South African football, ensuring quality options are available regardless of who is called upon for any given fixture.
Mailula and the case for form over age
Mosimane used the example of Cassius Mailula to illustrate his selection philosophy. The former Mamelodi Sundowns youngster endured a challenging period in Europe before fighting his way back into contention at club and international level.
The coach argued that Mailula's age should carry no weight in selection discussions. His view is that consistent performances, goals and contributions at club level are what earn a player a place in the national team, and he cited Mailula's recent form as proof that merit-based selection works.
Mosimane's commitment to youth extends beyond it as well. Over the past two years, he has expanded his Pitso Mosimane Soccer School network across the country, reflecting a long-standing emphasis on grassroots development throughout his coaching career.
His broader ambition is to help reshape South African football from the ground up, with AFCON qualification serving as the immediate priority while a stronger talent pipeline takes shape for the future.
Orlando Stadium confirmed for Mosimane’s Bafana return
Briefly News previously reported that SAFA had confirmed Orlando Stadium as the venue for Pitso Mosimane’s first competitive match back in charge of Bafana Bafana.
South Africa will host Guinea in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier on 26 September 2026, with tickets already on sale ahead of the fixture. SAFA president Danny Jordaan encouraged supporters to attend.
