Rassie Erasmus has explained why the Springboks will wait until Thursday, 20 August 2026, to announce their squad for the highly anticipated All Blacks series. The coach said the decision is about giving New Zealand less time to prepare for South Africa’s selection.
Why the Springboks are delaying their squad announcement
Speaking to the media in Johannesburg on Monday, 17 August, Erasmus said the timing was deliberate.
“I think the announcement only on Thursday is the respect for New Zealand and knowing how tough this one is going to be,” Erasmus said, as reported by SA Rugby Magazine.

He added:
“The less time they have to prepare for our team, the better. It’s not an arrogant thing. It’s a respect thing.”

Erasmus identified the breakdown as one of the areas where the Springboks could face their biggest challenge.
“The tough thing for us, which we think is very, very, very focused, [will be] brutal at the breakdown,” he said.
He also compared the four-Test contest with the intensity of a World Cup knockout campaign.
“I think four games against New Zealand is tougher than four playoff games,” Erasmus said.

Springboks keep selection plans under wraps
The delayed announcement gives the All Blacks less time to study South Africa’s final selection before the opening encounter.
Erasmus said the decision was not intended as arrogance, but rather reflected the seriousness with which the Springboks view their opponents.
With Thursday’s announcement approaching, attention will now turn to which players make Erasmus’ final plans for the blockbuster series.
