Former Springbok flyhalf Joel Stransky has been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, becoming the 176th inductee since the programme was established in 2006.
Stransky and former All Blacks loose forward Zinzan Brooke are the first two of seven players to be announced for the 2026 class. Their inductions were marked at a formal dinner in Cape Town on Thursday, 28 August, held on the eve of the second Test in the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series between South Africa and New Zealand.
Stransky's Place in Springbok Folklore
Stransky's legacy rests largely on a single moment: the extra-time drop goal he slotted at Ellis Park during the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, which sealed a 15-12 victory over New Zealand and delivered South Africa their first-ever World Cup title. He scored every point the Springboks registered in that match.
Across a 22-Test career spanning 1993 to 1996, Stransky accumulated 240 points and scored six tries in the green and gold jersey. His professional career extended beyond the international stage, with 73 appearances for Leicester Tigers in England, where he contributed 896 points and was part of the squad that claimed both the Pilkington Cup and the Allied Dunbar Premiership title.
After retiring from playing, Stransky built a second career as a television presenter, commentator and analyst, a role he has held for more than two decades, while also establishing himself as a successful entrepreneur in sports marketing.

Brooke Joins as Inductee No 177
Zinzan Brooke, inducted as No 177, won the Rugby World Cup with the All Blacks in 1987 at the age of 22 and went on to earn 58 caps over a 12-year international career, 54 of which were starts. His tally of 17 Test tries stood as a record for a forward at the time of his retirement. He is perhaps best known outside New Zealand for a 38-metre drop goal he kicked against England in the semi-finals of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The remaining five members of the Class of 2026 will be announced on Monday, 7 September, bringing the total number of Hall of Fame inductees to 182.
Stransky joins an extensive group of Springbok legends in the Hall of Fame, including Bryan Habana (2023), Os du Randt (2019), Joost van der Westhuizen (2015), Francois Pienaar (2011) and Danie Craven (2007), among others.
