Layla Kolbe has responded after her husband Cheslin Kolbe suffered a broken jaw during South Africa’s 29-24 victory over the All Blacks at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 5 September 2026.
The Springbok wing was moved to fullback for the third Test after Damian Willemse was ruled out with a hamstring injury. However, Cheslin’s evening ended early during an intensely physical encounter.
Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed the injury after the match.
“We lost Cheslin and I’m sorry to tell you that he has broken his jaw, so obviously he won’t travel to the USA,” Erasmus said.

Layla Kolbe turns to faith amid injury
Layla initially thanked supporters for their concern and prayers, writing on Instagram:
“We cannot reply to everyone and answer calls right now. We appreciate your concern and prayers. Giving it all to God. God is in control.”
She later shared a longer message, opening with:
“Here we are again.”
Layla said she believed the family was facing another difficult period and added that she was praying for Cheslin’s recovery.
“So today we speak the Blood of Jesus over Cheslin, his body, his recovery and our family,” she wrote.
She continued:
“We declare protection, healing, restoration and strength over him.”
Layla also said the family was choosing faith during the difficult moment.
“We choose faith over fear. Always,” she wrote.
Family celebrates Kylah’s dance victory
Amid the concern surrounding Cheslin, Layla also highlighted a positive moment from the same day. She praised Kylah and “her girls” for pushing through a long day and finishing her dance season with a victory.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Kylah and her girls for pushing through such a long day and claiming the win to end off her dance season for the year,” Layla wrote.
She also turned her attention to the Springboks, praising their response after losing key players during the Test.
“And to the Bokke — they always seem to fight even harder when they’re thrown into the deep end. What a team. What a fight,” she wrote.
South Africa’s victory put them 2-1 ahead in the series, but Erasmus confirmed that Cheslin will not make the trip to the United States.
Cheslin’s injury has added a significant setback to South Africa’s celebrations, while Layla’s messages have highlighted the family’s reliance on faith, support and each other as the Springbok begins his recovery.
