GAUTENG — Johannesburg Water has issued an urgent warning to residents of Bezuidenhout Valley after a potential contamination risk was identified in the suburb's water supply on 22 October 2026.

The alert follows the completion of emergency repairs to a damaged pipeline at the corner of 6th Street and 8th Avenue, which were carried out overnight on 21 October.

The damage occurred when a tree stump fell onto the pipeline during excavation work by a contractor who was replacing a sewer pipe in the area.

Affected streets and precautionary measures

The warning covers 8th Avenue at the intersections of 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Streets. Johannesburg Water teams are continuing to flush the pipeline on 22 October while water samples are collected and sent for laboratory analysis to determine whether the supply meets required quality standards.

Until those results are returned and clearance is granted, water supply to the affected areas will remain isolated. Residents have been advised not to use the water for any purpose, including drinking or cooking, until Johannesburg Water officially confirms it is safe.

The utility confirmed that an alternative water supply will be made available to affected households for the duration of the restriction.

The incident comes days after a serious confirmed contamination event affected areas east of Pretoria. Hundreds of gastrointestinal illness cases were reported which was linked to unchlorinated water contaminated by sewage at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works.
