Stuart Hogg: Rugby Star’s National Honour Withdrawn Following Domestic Abuse Conviction

  • King Charles revoked 15 honours in 2026, with former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg among those who lost their awards
  • Hogg, once celebrated as one of the world's best full-backs, pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife
  • The Honours Forfeiture Committee recommended the cancellation, with the decision officially confirmed in March 2026

King Charles has revoked the honours of 15 individuals in 2026, among them former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg, who lost his MBE following a domestic abuse conviction.

Hogg had been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2024 New Year Honours list in recognition of his services to rugby. That recognition was formally cancelled in March 2026, with his name struck from the official register.

**Hogg's Fall From Grace**

Few players have loomed as large in Scottish rugby as Hogg. Over a career spanning more than a decade, he earned 100 caps for Scotland, toured three times with the British and Irish Lions, and was twice named Six Nations Player of the Championship — achievements that once made him widely regarded as one of the finest full-backs in the world.

That legacy took a significant blow when Hogg pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife, Gillian. In January 2025, a court handed him a one-year community payback order. The MBE he had held for barely two years was subsequently cancelled, and he was required to return the insignia and cease using the associated letters after his name.

**How the Honours Forfeiture Process Works**

An MBE, OBE or knighthood is among the most prestigious forms of recognition available in Britain, but recipients hold their awards conditionally rather than absolutely. The monarch retains the authority to revoke an honour on the recommendation of the Honours Forfeiture Committee, a body that reviews cases involving criminal convictions, professional misconduct or conduct considered to bring the honours system into disrepute.

Once an honour is stripped, the individual must immediately stop using the post-nominal letters associated with the award and is formally asked to return the physical insignia.

For Hogg, the removal of his MBE represented the final chapter in a difficult period following his retirement from professional rugby, closing a story that had once been defined by remarkable achievement on the international stage.
