The residence noted that the students had come forward voluntarily after the incident was reported, and that they accepted responsibility for the recklessness of their actions. While acknowledging that no harm or harassment was intended, the residence conceded that the impact on those who witnessed it was real and negative.
One of the residents expressed a willingness to work towards establishing more appropriate ways for teams to handle forfeit conditions in future.
Sanctions and accountability
As part of the disciplinary outcome, the students will complete community service through the relevant Stellenbosch University channels. House Committee members involved in the incident will also face deductions from their honoraria. The students issued apologies, describing their conduct as irresponsible and disrespectful to those present.
The latest incident adds to a longer record of controversy surrounding the residence. In May 2022, former Stellenbosch University student Theuns du Toit was filmed urinating on fellow student Babalo Ndwayana's belongings, including his laptop and textbooks. The footage triggered widespread public outrage and prompted a formal disciplinary process at the university.

Du Toit was expelled following an internal disciplinary hearing that found him guilty of misconduct. The university's independent Disciplinary Appeal Committee upheld that decision in November 2022. In May 2025, however, Du Toit was found not guilty of crimen injuria and malicious damage to property in a criminal court.
The quad cricket incident has once again placed Huis Marais at the centre of debate over student conduct and institutional accountability at Stellenbosch University.
