Springboks legend Victor Matfield has urged the national coaching staff to exercise restraint when rotating their squad during the November Nations Championship fixtures, warning that flooding the team with inexperienced players could prove costly ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Speaking on the Rugby Rivals podcast, the former lock and Springboks captain acknowledged that head coach Rassie Erasmus would likely use the remaining Nations Championship fixtures to experiment and deepen the squad, but stressed that any changes should be carefully managed.

Matfield noted that several young players had caught the eye during the early rounds of the United Rugby Championship and Investec Champions Cup, potentially positioning themselves for a call-up to the end-of-year tour. He added that South Africa still had combinations to refine and that these fixtures could serve as useful development opportunities.

Erasmus showed a degree of squad continuity during the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series against the All Blacks, retaining largely the same matchday 23 across the final three Tests before making notable adjustments for the clash against Australia in Perth. That pattern has prompted discussion about how the coaching staff will approach the remaining Nations Championship games against Italy, France and Ireland, before the finals weekend in London.

Matfield's Warning From Past World Cup Campaigns

The former captain drew on historical precedent to reinforce his caution, recalling periods when South Africa sent largely second-string touring sides to Australia and New Zealand in the build-up to a World Cup. Those teams, lacking established combinations, suffered heavy defeats — an outcome Matfield believes the Springboks must avoid repeating.

His recommendation is to introduce no more than two or three uncapped or emerging players into an otherwise settled matchday squad. Doing so, he argued, would allow those youngsters to develop at international level while benefiting from the experience of teammates who have won major tournaments.

Matfield expects Erasmus to take a targeted approach rather than overhaul the squad wholesale, ensuring that any changes serve the broader goal of identifying players capable of contributing to South Africa's World Cup title defence in Australia next year.
