Richie Mo’unga has admitted that the Springboks have developed into a stronger side since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, describing Rassie Erasmus’ team as a “complete team” after South Africa’s 3-1 series victory over the All Blacks.
Speaking after the Springboks’ 43-28 win in Baltimore on Saturday, 12 September 2026, Mo’unga said South Africa can now challenge opponents in several areas of the game.
“They’re a complete team, able to take you on up front and able to be really clinical and take you on in threes,” Mo’unga said, as reported by SA Rugby Magazine.
“But also, they have got players that can play; they have got guys with fast feet in their backs.”

The 32-year-old made his first Test appearance in 1,050 days, last representing New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup final against South Africa at Stade de France.
All Blacks identify key area to improve
Mo’unga said the latest defeat showed how small moments can influence matches between the two sides.
“It’s just a game of inches,” he said, while acknowledging that New Zealand did not make enough of its opportunities.
The flyhalf also pointed towards the All Blacks’ work without possession as an area requiring attention. He suggested New Zealand must find ways to build pressure through their defence and limit South Africa’s ability to operate inside their own half.
That assessment came after South Africa won three consecutive Tests following the All Blacks’ opening-match victory at Ellis Park.

Springboks continue to set the standard
Mo’unga’s comments underline the scale of South Africa’s achievement during the 4-Test series. The Springboks recovered from their opening defeat to win the next three matches, including the decisive Baltimore encounter.
For Mo’unga, the return to Test rugby also provided a personal milestone. He said representing New Zealand again had been “so special” after spending three years away from the international game.
His assessment leaves the All Blacks with a clear focus as they look to close the gap against the world champions ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
