Renowned rugby journalist Peter Bills has credited All Blacks legend and Springboks assistant coach Tony Brown with fundamentally reshaping how South Africa plays attacking rugby, describing his influence as visible in virtually every phase of the Boks' game.

Bills, the author of *The Jersey*, assessed comments to Netwerk24, arguing that Brown has done far more than introduce a set of new attacking plays.

**Brown's Fingerprints on Bok Ball Skills**

"Innovative thinking is the key to what the Springboks are trying to do and, in my opinion, much of that has come from the man sitting next to Rassie Erasmus in the coaching box," Bills said. "The Boks' ball skills at a blistering pace while they look for space have Brown's fingerprints all over them. It's really enjoyable to watch how the Boks combine their physical intensity and ball skills."

The former All Blacks flyhalf has been credited with helping the Springboks marry their well-established physical dominance with a more dynamic, space-seeking brand of rugby. Bills described the shift as a deliberate philosophical one rather than a tactical tweak.

"Simply put: he wants his players to look for space and then exploit it with their pace and skills. Above all, he wants to see innovation in the Boks' game," Bills said. "The Boks want the ball in hand, they want to use their pace against anyone and they think on their feet."

**Bills Spotted Brown's Potential in 2022**

Bills said he first took note of Brown during research for his book in 2022, when he visited Dunedin to meet the coach, who was at that time leading the Highlanders. "I thought then that he was going to have a big impact on the world stage in time," he said.

The journalist reserved particular praise for Erasmus, describing him as someone who acted while others in rugby stood back. "It took a man with his finger on the pulse of the rugby world to take action when others hesitated," Bills said of the Springboks director of rugby.
