Long before Wilco Louw made his name anchoring scrums on international rugby's biggest stages, he was grounded in the sun-scorched farmland of the Western Cape.

Wilco Louw's Life Away From Rugby

In 2021, the Springbok tighthead prop offered his Instagram followers a glimpse into that quieter side of his world. He posted a photograph of himself seated on a tractor in Clanwilliam, with a planting implement fitted with rows of discs and coiled springs trailing behind the vehicle and freshly tilled earth stretching across the frame.

Clanwilliam lies at the heart of the Cederberg, a striking rural region defined by its sandstone mountains, sweeping valleys and indigenous fynbos. The area is also recognised as the heartland of rooibos production in South Africa, with citrus, grapes, deciduous fruit and livestock farming all contributing to its broader agricultural identity, making it one of the country's more productive rural districts.

Louw has previously shared photographs with his wife taken in the same region, suggesting the Cederberg holds a significant place in his personal life beyond the rugby field.

Wilco Louw's Rugby Career

Born in Ceres, Louw developed through the Western Cape rugby system and broke into the Stormers before earning his first Springbok cap in 2017. His career later took him abroad, with spells in France and England. During his time with Harlequins, he was part of the squad that claimed the Premiership title.

He subsequently returned to South Africa and had a stint with the Bulls before re-establishing himself in the Springbok setup. His decision to rejoin the Stormers this season has brought him back closer to the farming community in which his family has long been rooted.
