Canan Moodie has established himself as one of South Africa’s promising rugby stars, but the Springbok utility back has also built a notable profile off the pitch through his relationship with luxury Swiss watchmaker Breitling.

The 23-year-old is a Breitling ambassador and renewed his partnership with the brand for a second year in 2025. During a visit to Breitling’s Sandton City boutique, Moodie explored several models before choosing the one that appealed to him most.

His choice was the Super Chronomat B01 44, a striking blue-dial timepiece that was listed at around R218,000.

The watch has an added connection to Moodie’s rugby career, with its blue colour matching the colours associated with the Vodacom Bulls.

Canan Moodie’s Breitling partnership

Moodie’s relationship with Breitling developed after his breakthrough as a Springbok. In 2023, he was part of the South African squad that won the Rugby World Cup in France. At 20, he was the youngest member of the victorious squad.

SA Rugby lists him as a player capable of covering centre, wing and fullback, highlighting the versatility that has become a feature of his career.

The Breitling partnership was subsequently renewed for 2025. During the renewal, Moodie considered several watches, including the Chronomat B01 42 in green, Chronomat B01 42 Triumph Edition and Avenger Night Mission.

However, the Super Chronomat eventually won him over.

Moodie explained his decision by saying:

“The Super Chronomat caught my attention instantly and I knew it was the watch for me. It is a bold companion to my supercharged lifestyle and matches the colours of my rugby team perfectly.”

The blue model wasn't chosen simply for its appearance. Moodie has said he wears the watch during the rugby season and on match days, giving the Bulls-inspired colour added significance.

Inside the R218,000 Super Chronomat

The Super Chronomat B01 44 is a substantial watch. Breitling lists the model with a 44mm stainless-steel case, making it a sizeable timepiece on the wrist. It is also 14.45mm thick and weighs approximately 159.9g with its strap.

Underneath the design is Breitling’s Manufacture Calibre 01 self-winding mechanical movement. The movement provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve and incorporates a chronograph capable of measuring to a quarter of a second.

The watch is also rated to 200 metres of water resistance and uses glare-proofed sapphire crystal. Its rotating bezel and ceramic components give it the robust sports-watch character Breitling associates with the Super Chronomat range.

Breitling describes the collection as its “supercharged” take on the Chronomat, inspired by the original 1980s Chronomat.

Canan Moodie’s rugby career keeps moving

Moodie’s luxury-watch partnership has developed alongside a rapidly growing international career. He made his Springbok debut in 2022 and has since become a regular option across the backline. SA Rugby currently lists him with 25 Test caps and 45 points.

His versatility was again on display in September 2026 when Rassie Erasmus selected him at centre for the Springboks’ Perth Test against Australia.

Moodie partnered André Esterhuizen in midfield as Erasmus made 13 changes to the starting XV following the Springboks’ series against New Zealand.

The match ultimately ended in a dramatic 42-38 defeat for South Africa, despite a late comeback. Moodie was involved in the build-up to Edwill van der Merwe’s try.

The Perth Test was another chapter in a career that has already taken Moodie from a teenage World Cup winner to an established Springbok and, away from rugby, a representative of one of Switzerland’s best-known luxury watch brands.
