Rassie Erasmus has finally addressed the mystery surrounding the Springboks’ “Bald Squad”, revealing that the unusual haircuts resulted from an internal bet involving coaches and players.
The sudden transformation followed South Africa’s 3-1 victory over New Zealand in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series. Erasmus and members of his management team were subsequently seen sporting freshly shaved heads, while Siya Kolisi also joined the bald brigade.
The unusual look quickly became a talking point among supporters, but Erasmus has made it clear that the full story is not leaving the Bok camp just yet.
“I’m not going to tell you the reason. That was some internal bet with some of our coaches and players, and then after we beat New Zealand, they reminded us of what we had promised, so we had to keep our word,” Erasmus said, as reported by IOL.

Erasmus also moved to rule out any suggestion that the wager involved anything controversial.
“So, that was something internal. Nothing bad, nothing naughty. It was just a nice little bet, but it’s an inside joke. Everything is good,” he said.
That leaves the crucial details unanswered: what exactly was promised, who made the bet and who originally stood to lose?
For now, Erasmus is keeping those answers within the Springboks setup.
Springboks shift focus to Australia
With the focus shifting to the Perth Test, the Springboks have also entered a new phase after their demanding series against New Zealand.
Erasmus has opted for a heavily rotated line-up against Australia, making 13 changes to the starting XV that featured in the final All Blacks Test. André Esterhuizen will captain the side for the first time, while Jasper Wiese is set to reach 50 Test caps from the replacements bench.
Only Eben Etzebeth and Ethan Hooker have retained their starting positions from the team that beat New Zealand 43-28 in Baltimore.
South Africa will face the Wallabies at Optus Stadium on Sunday, 27 September, with kick-off scheduled for 11:45 am South African time.
