The Springboks do not have a winning statistical advantage over Australia in Perth ahead of their Test on Sunday, 27 September 2026. Despite South Africa’s emphatic victory at the venue in 2024, the overall record between the sides in the city is evenly balanced.
The teams have met 10 times in Perth since 1998, with South Africa recording four wins and Australia also claiming four. The other two matches ended in draws.
That makes Sunday’s clash intriguing, particularly with both teams arriving with recent momentum.
South Africa recently completed a 3-1 series victory over New Zealand, while Australia have also put together a strong run of results. The Wallabies are unbeaten in their last five Tests, including wins over Italy, Japan and Argentina.

What happened in the last Perth Test?
The most recent meeting in Perth came on 17 August 2024, when the Springboks beat Australia 30-12 at Optus Stadium.
South Africa scored four tries without conceding one, with Malcolm Marx crossing twice. Aphelele Fassi and Marco van Staden also scored. The victory was built around South Africa’s rolling maul, particularly after half-time.
However, the broader Perth record remains split. Previous meetings were also played at the former Subiaco Oval and Perth Rectangular Stadium.
Rassie Erasmus makes major changes
The Springboks enter Sunday’s match with a significantly changed starting XV. Coach Rassie Erasmus has made 13 changes to the team that defeated New Zealand 43-28 in Baltimore.
Andre Esterhuizen will captain South Africa, while Eben Etzebeth is set to win his 147th Test cap. Erasmus explained the selection by pointing to the different challenge Australia poses.
“Australia poses a completely different threat to New Zealand in the way they play,” Erasmus said.
“We believe these combinations would be best suited for the challenge that we will face against them.”
The statistics therefore offer no clear Perth advantage. Sunday’s Test will determine whether South Africa can move ahead in the city’s closely contested history.

Jean de Villiers raises questions over Springboks selection
