He made his district debut for Edinburgh in 1992, registering as cap number 911, and was part of the club's first professional squad in 1996 before being appointed captain the following year.

**Donaldson's Career at Currie RFC**

At Currie, Donaldson left a significant mark both as a player and as a coach. As a player, he captained the club to victory in the inaugural Tennent's Shield in 1996. He later returned to Currie in a coaching role alongside Graham Hogg, guiding the side to championship titles in 2006/07 and 2009/10.

Beyond his club work, Donaldson spent 36 years at Edinburgh's George Watson's College as a PE teacher and director of rugby before taking early retirement. During that period, he played a formative role in developing players who went on to compete at the highest level, including Scotland captain Stuart McInally and Scotland stand-off Adam Hastings.

Edinburgh Rugby issued a formal statement mourning his loss. "Everyone at Edinburgh Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former club captain, Ally Donaldson," the club said. "Ally made his debut for Edinburgh in 1992, becoming cap #911, and was part of the club's first professional squad in 1996 before being named captain the following year."

The statement continued: "A giant of the game in the capital, Ally went on to become a stalwart of coaching at Currie and Director of Rugby at George Watson's College, playing a key role in developing so many of the players who went on to wear the castle on their chest.
