Former Springbok wing Courtnall Skosan has retired from all forms of rugby, bringing the curtain down on a 16-year professional career that took him from Pretoria to Johannesburg, England and Cape Town. The 35-year-old announced his decision on social media on Sunday, 11 October 2026, reflecting on a journey filled with memorable milestones.

According to Rugby365, Skosan earned 12 Test caps for South Africa in 2017 and scored two international tries.

From the Bulls to Springbok rugby

Skosan first made his mark with the Bulls, progressing from his early career in Pretoria to senior rugby in 2011. His move to the Lions in 2014 proved pivotal, as he developed into a prolific finisher and helped the Johannesburg side reach three consecutive Super Rugby finals between 2016 and 2018.

In 2021, Skosan took his talents to England, joining Northampton Saints in the Premiership. He made an immediate impression by scoring a hat-trick on debut against Worcester Warriors, eventually registering 19 tries in 37 appearances for the club. After two seasons abroad, he returned to Cape Town in 2023 to join the Stormers, bringing international experience and a reputation for sharp finishing back to his home province.

Skosan reflects on his greatest rugby memories

In his retirement message, Skosan described the difficulty of summing up his career.

“It took me three months to summarise the best 16 years of my life. Thank you, rugby!” he wrote.

He also reflected on winning the 2015 Currie Cup, explaining that celebrating the triumph with his father meant more than lifting the trophy itself.

“The man who inspired me to play rugby. Some victories mean more than the silverware,” he said.

Skosan thanked his parents, coaches, teammates, clubs, supporters and family for their contributions to his career.

“The boots may be hung up, but the purpose remains,” he wrote, adding that his journey from Northpine in Cape Town had exceeded his expectations.

He ended his message with an optimistic declaration:

“The best is yet to come.”

His retirement closes a chapter spanning several South African franchises and a stint in English rugby. What comes next for the former Springbok remains unclear.
