Stormers Lose Junior World Champion Dominic Malgas to Fellow SA Team

The Cheetahs have strengthened their backline by signing Dominic Malgas from the Stormers XXIII. The 21-year-old fullback and utility back impressed during the 2026 Currie Cup season and will now continue his development in Bloemfontein.

Rugby365 announced the transfer on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. Malgas brings junior international experience and the ability to cover several positions.

Junior Springbok brings versatility and experience

Malgas represented the Junior Springboks five times and was part of the South African Under-20 squad that won the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy in 2025.

His versatility makes him a useful addition to the Cheetahs' outside backs. Although fullback is his preferred position, he can also cover other positions across the back three.

His goal-kicking adds another dimension to his game, giving the Free State side another option to convert scoring opportunities.

The Cheetahs will hope his performances at the Stormers translate into further progress as he takes on a new challenge.

Dominic Malgas shares excitement about Cheetahs move

Malgas expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Bloemfontein-based team and thanked those who helped him reach this stage of his career.

“I am really excited to start this next chapter with the Cheetahs,” he said.

He added:

“I’m grateful for the opportunity and for everyone who has supported me and helped me get to this point.”

Malgas also looked forward to meeting his new teammates and getting down to work.

“I’m looking forward to getting to Bloemfontein, meeting the team, putting in the work and taking on this new challenge,” he said.

Cheetahs prepare for 2026/27 Challenge Cup campaign

The signing comes as the Cheetahs prepare for their 2026/27 Challenge Cup campaign. The team had not announced its squad for the competition when Rugby365 published the transfer news on 7 October.

Springboks face injury concerns ahead of November Tests

Briefly News previously reported that the Sharks suffered a 39-22 defeat to the Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday 10, October, with Eben Etzebeth and Vusi Moyo both forced off with injuries.

Sharks coach JP Pietersen said Etzebeth was struggling with a painful knee complaint, while Moyo appeared to have dislocated his shoulder. The injuries could be significant as the Springboks prepare for their November Tests against Italy and France.
