FRANCE— French President Emmanuel Macron and French politicians have condemned United States President Donald Trump’s off-the-cuff remarks about Macron’s wife.

Trump made the remarks on 1 April 2026 at the White House in Washington after a press conference. Trump said that Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, treats him badly and that he is still recovering from a left hook Macron allegedly received from his wife. Trump was referring to an incident in 2025, which showed Brigitte shoving Macron’s face on a trip to Vietnam. Trump also provided details of his phone call with Macron. He said that he asked Macron for assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran recently closed to US allies. Trump then mimicked Macron’s accent and his alleged response.

“At this point, bro is just freelancing as a gossip blog.”

Serniel laughed.

“The next American president will be spending his first four years going around the world and apologising to every country.”
