Fatal N1 Collision Near Polokwane Leaves 2 Dead, Route Closed

POLOKWANE -Two people have been killed following a horrific crash on the N1 near Polokwane today, prompting the temporary closure of the busy route.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are currently on the scene attending to the incident, while traffic officials work to manage congestion in the area.

What happened?

According to SABC News reporters on the ground, the crash involved a collision between two vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicate that, in addition to the two fatalities, one person sustained serious injuries and is receiving urgent medical care.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the affected stretch of the N1 and make use of the R101 as an alternative route while authorities continue their response.

Accident claims the lives of five people

In a related incident, a horrific accident claimed the lives of five people in the early hours of the days before Easter weekend in Limpopo when a bakkie and a smaller vehicle collided. The accident affected travellers on the N1 between Mookgophong and Modimolle as holidaymakers prepare for the Easter Weekend. Officials on the scene diverted the traffic, as the N1 towards Polokwane is expected to be the most affected. The number of the injured and deceased was unconfirmed at the time of the report, as the number of total occupants of both vehicles was unconfirmed. Emergeny services said the cause of the accident was also unknown.
