Lionel Messi was handed a marching order for the first time in his Barcelona career during their 3-2 Spanish Super Cup defeat to Athletic Bilbao.
The Catalans missed the chance to lift their first title of 2021 despite taking the lead twice in the encounter.
In spite of taking the lead twice through Antoine Griezmann's brace, an extra minute strike from Inaki Williams sealed the victory for the Lions.
Messi was caught by the Video Assistant Referee swinging his right hook at Asier Villalibre towards the end - the action that got him sent off for the first time in over 750 games for the Blaugrana.
The Spanish football FA are planning to deliberate on the Argentine's matter and he could get a four-match ban depending on the outcome of their meeting later this week.
However, this is not the first time the six-time Ballon d'Or winner has felt frustrated during a football clash as reported by Give Me Sport.
He has previously been sent off for Argentina twice - and can perhaps consider himself fortunate that he's picked up just three red cards in his career to date. Though it is not easy to have players kick you for 90 minutes.
Lionel Messi vs Joao Felix
Both players had an altercation when Barcelona and Atletico Madrid clashed the Spanish Super Cup semifinals last year.
vs Sergio Ramos
The legendary players had a clash during their Spanish League meeting on March 2, 2019 - a game the Catalans won by a lone goal at the Bernabeu.
vs Edinson Cavani
Messi and the current Man United forward were an item in November 2019 in a match between Argentina and Uruguay.
vs Gary Medel
Messi received the second red card of his career after clashing with Chile’s Gary Medel in the Copa America third-place playoff in July 2019.
Lionel Messi vs James Milner
James Milner and Messi had their episode during Liverpool’s Champions League contest against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in 2019
vs Darijo Srna
Messi was fortunate to escape without a red card when pushed and then shoved his head into Shakhtar Donetsk's Darijo Srna in the 2009 UEFA Super Cup.
vs Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa
Barcelona's game against AS Roma in August 2015 was supposed to be friendly but it was marred by a nasty altercation between Messi and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
vs Weligton
Messi didn't appear to do much wrong to warrant Malaga's Weligton to grab him around the throat in a 0-0 draw in 2014.
vs Ronald Raldes
Messi’s first real clash on a football pitch was dated about 10 years ago. he reacted to being blocked from the ball by giving Raldes a push during Copa America group-stage opener against Uruguay.
Briefly.co.za earlier reported that five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo has been named Globe Soccer Awards’ Player of the Century.
The 35-year-old beat arch-rival Lionel Messi and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah to the prestigious award.
Ronaldo had more votes than the two other finalists after being voted the best player of the 2000s in the United Arab Emirates.
Having missed out on the FIFA The Best player earlier this month, the Portuguese wrapped up the year 2020 on a very high.
