Manchester City rise to the third position on the Premier League table after edging Brighton and Hove Albion by a lone goal at the Etihad Stadium.

Phil Foden's lone strike in the 44th minute of the encounter ensured the Citizens claimed maximum points in the end.

The home team got a chance to double their lead in the 92nd minute but Raheem Sterling failed to convert the chance.

Kevin De Bruyne was brought down by Robert Sanchez in his own 18-yard box after his effort to save a back pass from his teammate failed.

Pep Guardiola's men have also gone eight EPL games without a defeat as they are yet to lose any game since their 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last November.

Foden has now scored three goals and two assists in 11 English topflight appearances so far this campaign.

Bernardo Silva made an effort to get his name on the scores sheet but he was denied by the woodworks while Gabriel Jesus, who recently returned from COVID-19 issues was unable to make a mark in the game.

City started the game on a brighter note as Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan combined well to produce the first major opening in the 14th minute, but the Belgium international was kept out by Robert Sanchez inside the six-yard box.

Guardiola's men remained comfortably on top in the second half and after Mahrez missed a one-on-one, Sanchez denied Gundogan and saw Silva's follow-up – which came after he sent the ball through Ben White's legs – crash back off the bar.

In other EPL news, Briefly.co.za reported that Paul Pogba's unbeatable volley in the 71st minute was all Manchester United needed to beat Burnley at Turf Moor.

The victory ensured the Red Devils maintain their unbeaten run away from home in the Premier League this campaign. Pogba wasted no time before smashing the ball into the back of the net after receiving a sumptuous delivery from Marcus Rashford from the right flank.

The Englishman after receiving the pass waited for the Frenchman to arrive at the vantage position before sending the ball to him while the World Cup winner fired home from the edge of the box.
