Lebo Mashile and Other Celebrities Want Nathi Mthethwa Removed

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthetwa has rubbed a few Mzansi celebrities the wrong way and they now want him removed from his position. A petition has been drafted by artists who believe that the minister hasn't done enough for the entertainment industry.

Poet Lebo Mashile is one of the entertainers who have been leading the movement. The petition is titled #NathiMustGO. Lebo is usually fighting for the rights of artists and this time is no different.

Lebo tweeted a link to the petition and said that it had been drawn up because of Mthethwa's inability to deal with how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the entertainment industry.

Since it has been launched earlier this week on Tuesday, the petition has gathered signatures from over 200 artists from different parts of the industry.

An artist who is also leading the petition, Gregory Maqoma, told TshisaLIVE why they had created the petition in the first place.

According to Gregory, the artists who have signed the petition want Nathi Mthethwa to resign from his position by 31 January 2021.

Earlier in the week, Minister Nathi Mthethwa tweeted that South African theatre is alive and well, but the artists beg to differ.

In other entertainment news, Briefly.co.za reported that Thandiswa Mazwai commented on jobs lost in the entertainment industry. Thandiswa Mazwai has taken to social media to share that the entertainment industry has lost a lot of jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The singer shared that the music industry has cut all jobs due to the ongoing lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus in Mzansi. The Bongo Maffin member took to Twitter and commented on a tweet by eNCA that Heineken SA is set to cut jobs due to the pandemic.

"Music industry already cut all jobs. All instrumentalists, festival organisers, dress makers, make up artists, sound engineers, lighting engineers, music managers, backing vocalists, roadies... the list continues."
