Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki says their failure to make it to Cameroon has left a deep scar on his team.
Ntseki also explains what makes it more unbearable is the fact they were almost close to booking a spot at the 2019 Caf African Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon next year.
According to well-known sportscaster Robert Marawa, the Free State-born manager has lamented the fact that he could not get experienced players for the qualifying campaign because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Just before the 2-0 loss at the hands of Sudan, Bafana had 11 points and only needed a draw, but they could not get the desired result as they will miss out on the showpiece.
Marawa posted a comment from the national team boss on Twitter, adding that he has failed as a coach. Marawa posted.
“The pain is more from us..we were almost in Cameroon...Because of Covid-19 we could not get our regular players for Bafana.
“As the Coach my disappointment is huge for my personal growth, my personal achievements...I have failed as a coach.."
Despite many calling for coach Pitso Mosimane's return, legendary coach Clive Barker has opted for a different choice of a candidate.
The 1996 African Cup of Nations winner says the South African Football Association's decision to employ Ntseki was not a good move.
He believes Ntseki is still inexperienced to lead a team of Bafana's stature and argues that the coach has never won anything before. Barker told Timeslive.
“I think it is terrible that we have all these facilities that we have got and just be knocked out so early. It is just crazy. The quality of football leaves quite a bit to be desired.
“I mean‚ it is crazy. You can’t go there and be in charge of a national team and you have never won anything. I can’t recall if he has won something and if he has won‚ then I do apologise.
“I think they should have thought of maybe someone like Benni McCarthy or people like that, who can come in and turn this whole thing around.”
Briefly.co.za recently reported that the Botshabelo-born coach is expected to engage Safa in talks to discuss his future.
The 1996 African champions were looking for a draw in their final qualifier against Sudan on Sunday evening, but the embattled coach failed to guide his men to a favourable result.
Meanwhile, the Cameroon Afcon edition will be the fourth time the 2010 Fifa World Cup hosts have failed to qualify in seven previous qualifiers.
