Sizwe Dhlomo found himself in a heated back-and-forth on X on 13 August 2026 after questioning the accuracy of World Bank unemployment data for African countries.
The debate kicked off when a page shared 2025 World Bank figures on unemployment rates across Africa. One user expressed disbelief at the numbers, pointing out that some of the continent's most impoverished nations appeared to have the lowest unemployment rates.
"Y'all want me to believe that the poorest countries in Africa have the lowest unemployment rate?"
The South African broadcaster waded into the conversation, arguing that the figures could not be taken at face value.

"Yes, because they don't know how to accurately keep track of the numbers. Even our real unemployment numbers are higher than what's reported," Sizwe said, suggesting that data collection limitations across the continent skew official statistics.
His comment drew an unexpected response from a Ugandan user going by the handle KozeDeejay, who mocked Sizwe's reasoning as a typical South African deflection.
