South African musician Daniel Koppel, better known as Danny K, has opened up about the death of his wife, Lisa Koppel, revealing she lost a two-year battle with colorectal cancer. The family confirmed Lisa's passing on Monday, 10 August 2026. She was 41 years old.

In a heartfelt post shared on his official Instagram page the following day, Danny K disclosed that Lisa received her diagnosis in November 2023. The singer and activist described how the family exhausted every possible avenue in search of a cure, both in South Africa and abroad.

"Together with our family, we searched for hope in South Africa and around the world, pursuing every treatment and every opportunity available to us. Tragically, despite everything, we could not save her."

Why Lisa Koppel kept her illness a secret

Danny K explained that his wife made a deliberate choice to keep her condition out of the public eye throughout her illness, driven by a desire to shield those closest to her.

"She never wanted pity, attention or sympathy. Above all, she wanted to protect our children and preserve their happiness and innocence for as long as possible."

The award-winning musician described Lisa as someone who faced her illness with remarkable courage and resolve, fighting with "extraordinary strength and determination" until the very end.

Reflecting on the depth of the loss, Danny K did not hold back in expressing the grief that has consumed both their families.

"The Koppel and Gundelfinger families have been left shattered. I have lost the wife I worshipped, our three children have lost an extraordinary mother, and her family and friends have lost someone they deeply loved."

Lisa Koppel hoped to one day help others

Despite never getting the chance to speak publicly about her experience, Lisa had harboured a quiet hope that her journey could one day benefit others.

"Lisa hoped that one day she would use her experience to raise awareness of this disease and help others through early detection. She never got that opportunity. Our family will now carry that purpose forward in her name."

The tribute drew hundreds of condolence messages from fans, friends and fellow artists, who flooded the comment section with messages of support for the musician and his family during what he described as an unimaginably painful time.
