Media personality and YouTube star Lasizwe took to X on 15 August, the night of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), to publicly call out Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie. In an open letter-style post, Lasizwe did not mince his words, demanding to know why one of South Africa's most beloved award ceremonies appears to be falling apart.

Lasizwe's post painted a bleak picture of an industry in decline. He pointed to shrinking award show quality, fading entertainment value, and what he described as a disappearing corporate investment — all while insisting the country has every ingredient needed to punch far above its weight on the global stage.

"South Africa has EVERYTHING it needs to produce world-class entertainment!" he wrote. "We have the talent, creatives, performers, producers, technical skills and technology."

Are SA's standards fading?

Having grown up watching the SAMAs, Lasizwe said the current state of the industry is "genuinely disappointing," and questioned whether funding is actually reaching those doing the creative work. He stopped short of declaring the industry broken, but made clear that a turning point is overdue.

"I don't think we've hit rock bottom, but this should be our turning point," he added.

His post clearly resonated. When a follower mocked the event's choice of MC, specifically calling out Casper Nyovest, Lasizwe stepped in to defend him.

@Deep_Dive_GP: "The moment I had Casper as an MC I knew this was it!"

@lasizwe: "He is nervous, guys. Give him a chance 😔🙏"

Not everyone was sympathetic to Lasizwe's broader call for investment, though. One user pushed back sharply, questioning whether taxpayer money should be directed at what they described as "YouTube skits, podcasts, influencers and telenovelas."

@ZuluLunzulu: "You want our tax to fund entertainment? To fund YouTube skits, podcast, influencers and telenovelas? USharp? You want us to fund your dress-up parties where you stroke each other's egos?"

Lasizwe was quick to respond, defending the role of entertainment in shaping national identity.

@lasizwe: "As a country, we need entertainment… that's how culture moves. That's how we all connect. The Entertainment Industry connects us."

SAMAs nostalgia turns to disappointment

Several Mzansi users backed Lasizwe's sentiments, reflecting on how far the SAMAs have slipped from their former glory.

@LeboNkutha: "Nah honestly hey. SAMA was something we were all excited to watch growing up, and now even the build-up to the event is just disappointing to witness"

Whether Minister McKenzie responds to Lasizwe's very public plea remains to be seen, but the conversation has clearly touched a nerve with South Africans who once held the SAMAs close to their hearts.
