Cassper Nyovest stepped into his SAMA32 hosting duties and delivered on the night, but it was a piece of backstage gossip that had social media buzzing before the curtain even fell.
Sharp-eyed fans watching the South African Music Awards on 15 August 2026 picked up on what they believed was a frosty atmosphere between the rapper and media personality Bonang Matheba. No hugs, no chats, nothing that pointed to warmth between the two, at least not where cameras could see.
The speculation spread quickly, with user @mosadiwaMopedi posting, "Is cassper and Bonang beefing? Not chats, no hugs, nothing! #SAMA32."
What really happened backstage at the SAMAs
Cassper, born Refiloe Phoolo, was not about to let that narrative breathe. Taking to X shortly after, he set the record straight with characteristic directness.

"Queen B and I were just backstage cracking up cause she was dissing me about how stressed I am. No bad vibes at all. Let's nip this one in the bud FAST!!! #SAMA32," he wrote, painting a very different picture to the one fans had constructed from the ceremony footage.
For a first-time host of one of South Africa's most prestigious music award nights, the pressure was real, and by his own admission it showed. But his account suggests that whatever stress he carried backstage, Bonang was right there laughing about it with him rather than adding to it.
Mzansi responded to Cassper's post with a mix of amusement and genuine warmth for the rapper's performance on the night.
@BlvckVe couldn't resist pointing out the error:
"It's 'nip in the bud ', but I know you're gonna say I must focus on English and you will focus on getting money."
@BackToBasicxs had a more heartfelt message for the host:
"I'm so sad that you spent your night like this. I hope you're not taking anything said here seriously. You did exceptionally well, and you should not be responding to these people at all. Like at all."
@PMokgoje echoed that sentiment, addressing the rapper directly by his first name:
"Refiloe people will always find something negative to say papa. You're doing great for the first time host. I'm actually loving every moment 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 🥳 👊 🥳 don't lose focus."
