A Cairo criminal court delivered one of Egypt's most high-profile verdicts in recent memory on Saturday, 6 September 2026, sentencing television personality Sarah Khalifa, 39, to death by hanging alongside 11 others on drug trafficking charges. The case has sent shockwaves across the region.

Khalifa was a familiar face to Egyptian audiences, best known for hosting the security and crime-focused programme Mission Impossible on the private Al-Mehwar TV channel. Beyond television, she ran a cosmetic surgery clinic and an event planning company, and had built a social media following of over two million on Instagram.

What the court found

Prosecutors alleged that Khalifa and her co-defendants formed an organised criminal gang that imported raw materials from abroad to manufacture synthetic drugs, storing them in residential apartments used as makeshift laboratories. Investigators seized more than 750kg of drugs and raw materials from two such properties, along with unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The case involved 28 defendants in total. Alongside the 12 handed death sentences, nine were given life imprisonment, and seven were acquitted. The death sentences were issued following mandatory consultation with Egypt's Grand Mufti, a required step in capital cases under Egyptian law, but the verdicts remain subject to appeal.

Khalifa was also handed a separate prison sentence relating to an assault and filming case.

The presenter denied all charges from the moment of her arrest in April 2025, telling investigators she had "never smoked a cigarette in my life." Egyptian media reported that she was visibly distressed during the sentencing session, weeping and appealing directly to the court:
