KWAZULU-NATAL - A video showing a man described as an asylum seeker issuing what appears to be a death threat against Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has gone viral on social media.

The threat followed clashes on 3 September 2026, when March and March supporters marched to a makeshift refugee camp situated outside the Home Affairs offices on Che Guevara Road in Durban.

The group described the action as a site "clean-up." The camp had been home for months to hundreds of documented refugees and asylum seekers, predominantly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda, following their earlier displacement.

Ngobese-Zuma shared the footage on X on 5 September 2026, drawing widespread condemnation from South Africans who viewed it as a direct and criminal threat against a South African activist on home soil.

Foreign national threatens Ngobese-Zuma

In the video, the foreign national hit back at the March and March leader, insisting that she had no power.

"Whether they like it or not, if Jacinta likes it or not, we are Africans, and you can never change that. And you, you don't have that power to change Africa. Either your way is going to take you to the grave, I'm telling you. And you can see me. That's what I'm telling you," he stated.

The man's threats came as confrontations between the two groups turned violent, with rocks exchanged before police intervened using stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets.

Ngobese-Zuma stated that 10 of her members sustained injuries, while accounts also noted injuries among refugees, including children, and a police officer struck by a stone. Some Congolese nationals were also arrested on public violence charges. Ngobese separately alleged that an individual at the camp had a firearm, and that police did not search the premises due to the absence of a search warrant.

South Africans demand police action

The video drew urgent calls for a criminal investigation, with many users invoking the killing of March and March Gauteng leader Andile Mvuyiselwa Somgaxa as a reason to treat such statements seriously.
