British singer Rita Ora and her filmmaker husband Taika Waititi have been making the most of their South African visit, combining a Kruger National Park safari with a low-key shopping trip through Cape Town's city centre.
Days after a South African content creator bumped into Rita Ora at a Johannesburg spa, the couple stopped by Mami Wata's Heritage Square store on Shortmarket Street on Wednesday, browsing the surf-inspired clothing brand's collection and picking up a few items. The brand, which celebrates African surf culture through its designs, shared a photo of the pair on Instagram, with Waititi pictured holding his purchase.
"Honoured to have [Rita Ora] and [Taika Waititi] visit our Mami Wata Heritage Square store yesterday," the caption read.

For Mami Wata employee Pinky Belebesi, the encounter was one she won't soon forget. She described herself as "starstruck" but said what stood out most was how the couple carried themselves.

"They were both very sweet, friendly, welcoming and genuinely nice. Even though they're celebrities, they didn't act as if they were better than anyone else; they were just two normal, polite people," she said, adding, "Meeting them was a wonderful experience that I'll never forget."

Mami Wata co-founder Nick Dutton noted that the store draws well-known visitors from time to time, but said the brand's heart lies in telling stories about African surfing heritage. The company, which has been operating for nine years, also published a book called AFROSURF.
"Our book AFROSURF profiles surfers from across the continent and also covers Africa's role in surf's origin story, whereby surfing was first documented in 1640 in Ghana," Dutton said.

Before arriving in Cape Town, Ora had shared a collection of photographs from a safari through Singita in Kruger National Park, crediting Hylton Langley Safaris for putting the trip together. The experience clearly moved her. "Words cannot even begin to describe how much getting off my phone and just existing has changed me mentally," she wrote, describing the trip as "the ultimate reset."
She also gave followers a sense of how extraordinary the wildlife sightings were, mentioning her first real-life rhino encounter and witnessing a lion and lioness mate.
"I definitely cried a few times," she admitted.

Waititi's presence in Cape Town also carries a sporting angle. The filmmaker is a known supporter of New Zealand's All Blacks, and his visit coincides with a highly anticipated rugby fixture between New Zealand and South Africa on Saturday, 29 August 2026, giving him yet another reason to be in the city.
