Her lineage follows a unique female matrilineal succession, and the queen is believed by her people to hold spiritual powers over clouds and rainfall, earning her the title of Rain Queen. President Cyril Ramaphosa officially recognised Masalanabo Modjadji VII as the reigning monarch, cementing her royal status in the eyes of the South African government.

Parts of the royal family have challenged her recognition in the Pretoria High Court, arguing that traditional customs and residency requirements were not properly met, and calling for her brother to be installed instead.
