The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has released its forecast for Wednesday, 21 October 2026, and residents in several provinces should prepare for very different conditions depending on where they live.

The most urgent alert centres on Limpopo, where a heat wave is gripping the Western Bushveld and is expected to persist through Friday. The province will start the day cloudy with morning fog over the south-central parts before turning warm to hot, with extremely high temperatures in the Bushveld areas. Residents there are urged to stay hydrated and limit time outdoors during peak afternoon hours.

Fire danger spreads across multiple provinces

SAWS has also flagged extremely high fire danger conditions in several regions. These include most of the North West, southern parts of the Northern Cape, the Central Karoo in the Western Cape, the Mafube local municipality in the Free State, southern Limpopo and the northwestern parts of Mpumalanga. Residents and farmers in these areas should avoid any activities that could spark a blaze.

What each province can expect

Gauteng will see fine, warm weather with heat building in the extreme north. A high UVB sunburn index has been recorded for the region, so sun protection is strongly advised.

Mpumalanga will experience morning cloud and fog along the escarpment before clearing to warm conditions, with hot spells expected in the Lowveld.

North West and the Free State are both in for a fine but windy and warm-to-hot day.

The Northern Cape will be fine and breezy with cool to warm temperatures, becoming partly cloudy in the south and west.

The Western Cape can expect cloud cover and cool to warm conditions, with scattered showers over the south-western parts and isolated rain along the south coast and adjacent interior.

Both halves of the Eastern Cape will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and rain in the southwest.

KwaZulu-Natal will begin with morning fog patches over the northern interior before turning fine and warm to hot. The northeastern parts are expected to be very hot, and the region carries an extreme UVB sunburn index. Residents should take precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Overall, Wednesday shapes up as fine and warm to hot across much of the country's interior, with the coastal regions offering cooler and wetter relief.
