  • Limpopo faced a separate threat, with severe thunderstorms forecast to sweep across the province
  • SAWS urged residents in all three affected provinces to take precautions ahead of the extreme conditions

South Africa's weather on Thursday, 15 October 2026, told two very different stories depending on where you lived. The SA Weather Service (SAWS) issued alerts for three provinces, warning of a scorching heat event in the east and violent storms further north.

KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape were placed on alert for dangerously high temperatures. Residents in both provinces were advised to limit time outdoors during peak heat hours, stay hydrated and check on elderly or vulnerable family members who may be more susceptible to heat-related illness.

The heat warning came as spring temperatures continue to push higher across much of South Africa. Coastal and inland areas alike are feeling the intensity of the season.

While the south baked, Limpopo faced a completely different extreme. SAWS forecast severe thunderstorms for the province, which can bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail and dangerous lightning in a short space of time.

Communities in low-lying areas and those near rivers were urged to remain cautious, as storms of this nature can cause flash flooding with very little warning. Motorists were also advised to avoid driving through flooded roads.

The contrasting alerts underscored the wide range of weather conditions South Africa can experience simultaneously across its different climate zones, particularly as the country moves deeper into the summer season. Residents across all three provinces were encouraged to monitor updates from SAWS.
