South African music icon Yvonne Chaka Chaka celebrated another year of marriage to her husband, Dr Leonard Mandlalele Mhinga. The singer turned to Instagram on 7 October 2026, sharing throwback photographs and a message of gratitude that has warmed hearts across Mzansi.

"37 years. We can only thank GOD for his love. Happy anniversary, Kokwane. Siguga Sonke (We've grown old together). 7/10 1989," she wrote in the touching post.

Born Yvonne Machaka in Soweto, Chaka Chaka built her name as one of South Africa's most celebrated singers, songwriters, and humanitarians. Her husband, affectionately nicknamed "Tiny," is a medical doctor and entrepreneur. Together, the couple have raised four sons: Ningi, Themba, Mfumu, and Mandla. Their bond, by all accounts, has been built on shared faith, family, and an enduring sense of purpose.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s candid views on monogamy

The anniversary also brings to mind a memorable moment from 2012, when Chaka Chaka stood at the United Nations headquarters alongside Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to advocate for gay rights. She used the platform to share her personal views on marriage and monogamy with characteristic directness.

"My husband is allowed to have three or four wives, but I would not let him. If he wants to marry someone else, let him go. He can do that," she said at the time.

She continued by explaining that Dr Mhinga has always understood and respected her position on the matter, adding that "that's why he chose me."

It was a rare, candid glimpse into the couple's private understanding and the values that have anchored their relationship across nearly four decades together.
